Market Day: RPG Economy Software

Have you ever wanted to do stuff like vary local prices? Imitate supply and demand? Ensure there's more to look at while shopping?

If so, you probably encountered the same issue: it takes a lot of work. No more!

With Market Day, you can imitate a full economy with weighted rarity, settlement size, and price variation, all based on a random seed. This means that if you use a town name as your random seed, the results will be the same every time. If you change the town size, you'll get similar results with slight size alterations without completely throwing the table out. If you give your players this software, you can give them access to a market by simply telling them the name.

The whole program runs from a high-speed web-interface using an embedded html file right from your computer.

License

You have permissive license to use this software with your gaming group. Once you own it, share it freely with your players. This is how it is intended to be used. They can all see the same list of items based on the random seed, and you can let the software do its work to simulate the economy without input from you.

Functionality

The software works based on a .csv (spreadsheet) file. You can select any properly configured spreadsheet to build a market list from it. The included spreadsheet is suitable for any psuedo-medieval fantasy game, and the base values should translate into the typical d20-based games. While no magic items are included, they can be easily added to the file yourself by following the directions in the provided documentation. Want to switch genres? You can make any item list work, provided you build the .csv correctly. Again, see the provided documentation for complete directions.

Once you've got the item list pulled up, you can use the quantity column to buy and sell items at the listed rates. Select everything you want to purchase or trade or sell, then click the "Show Receipt" button. Your entire transaction is itemized and totaled for you! You have the option to download this receipt as a text file to share with your group or retain for personal records.

Just want to share a quick item list without the hassle of distributing this software to players? Export the file to a print-friendly pdf for sharing and printing! Your current variations will be preserved for everyone's use.

Has anyone else had a problem with the entries for Gold showing up? I finally got the Ingot to work but I have no idea how, because I tried all the same things with the others and they don't show. In fact, in the Fantasy.csv which comes with the product, no products starting with "G" show up except the ingot. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I finally got Gold to show but I had to delete everything except the word, "Gold." Gold, Ingot 5-lb works fine. So, Gold now shows, but not 1 lb (or 1-lb, 1lb, (1 lb), et.al.). Thanks!

This looks really cool! I mostly run Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition, which uses a weird currency system based on traditional English money.

The smallest currency is the brass penny, 1d. 12 brass pennies equals 1 silver shilling, -/1. 20 silver shillings (-/20) equals 1 Gold Crown 1 GC or 1/-. So an object that cost 1 Gold Crown, 3 silver shilings and 10 brass pennies would be 1/3 10d.

If I wanted to use this app, is there any support for this sort of currency system? I could convert all prices to brass pennies, but it would be kind of awkward. And percentiles of gold crowns or silver shillings are terribly useful, because 0.1 silver shillings is somewhere between 2 and 3 brass pennies, right?

Thanks!

It doesn't have support for that kind of currency at this time. However, if I am able, I will update the software to support it and comment here again when it works.

It runs using html / JavaScript in your web browser. The software is extremely lightweight. It should run on any potato with the ability to open a browser and save 30 kb of files.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
