The Winter King (RuneQuest)

A snow storm rises upon the hills. A fire demon is freed from its prison. The Winter King comes, seeking those who will travel on the Other Side to drive back the enemies of Winter.

This short adventure takes the adventurers on a Heroquest into the heart of Winter itself - to the very northernmost edge of the world, Valind's kingdom. The default starting point is the Starfire Ridges, in Colymar lands in the kingdom of Sartar, but the adventure can be adapted and located anywhere a winter storm might occur.

The adventure is suited for most types of character, although it is best for characters with strong combat capabilities who are also foes of the Lunar Empire.

The book includes new illustrations from Simon Bray and Ludovic Chabant portraying the Winter King, and the beings and antagonists that will be encountered in Valind's Wastes.

For a limited time, a discount of $2.00 off the price of the print-on-demand version of this book is available to owners of my Unofficial Buyer's Guide to RuneQuest and Glorantha.

* "There are some things I really like about the scenario. There is a very 'we're not in Kansas any more' feeling when the PCs realize that they aren't where they're supposed to be, but probably inside a heroquest (my players loved it). This is also a scenario where the PCs are involved in one of the most major meta myths about Winter in Glorantha (and how the Lunars fight winter). And third, it gives the PCs a good chance to encounter some really cool Lunar magic." - Calle Melin, playtest GM.

* "My group had great fun with this, their first Heroquest, and the Lunars gave them a tough challenge." - Rob Marcus, playtest GM.

* "A heroquesting scenario in three parts, in which heroic adventurers aid Orlanth’s bolshy kinsman the God of Winter against foes ancient and modern. Contains excellent suggestions and examples for involving players in epic “hero plane” encounters, plus some beautiful original Gloranthan artwork." - Nick Brooke, Jonstown Compendium Index 2024.

* "I really liked the Winter King. Shows how to turn a bit of well known Glorantha mythic lore into a playable scenario, does not try to get too prescriptive (and as a result is something that will be useful no matter what hero questing rules / framework we settle on, and its role in your game), but introduces cool new ideas, and is good playable fun." - David Cake

Good well-thought-out scenario. Something different, makes good use of some of the myths of Glorantha. We took two longish sessions to play through the whole thing. The background information, consideration of different player options and wise words [...]

This is a fantastic, modular Heroquest that can be inserted into any Glorantha campaign in which the characters are antagonistic toward the Lunar Empire. The story is focused and will not confuse new player. Character choices are meaningful and all the [...]

I loved this adventure ! It can easily be slotted into a campaign such as the one I am running (Six Seasons, where I will slot this into Phase 1 of the Company of the Dragon) and is well written, with wit and intelligence. Your players get to go [...]

This adventure is, first, great gaming fun. And second, great world-building material. It explores an area of Gloranthan lore not usually getting much game play and fits well into a larger campaign. It took us slightly more than 3 hours of real time an [...]

This was huge fun to run! Adventuring alongside a god was a great experience for my players, and trying to turn the tide in a battle that he always loses made them conjure some interesting alternative strategies. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
