Shadow-Cha'alt volume one

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Whether you're into ShadowDark, or one of the dozens of new OSR / old-school "D&D" rule-sets that've come out over the last few years, this is a memorable and easy-to-run scenario for veterans and novice GMs alike.

If this new series, SHADOW-CHA'ALT, is well-received, it'll come out on a monthly release schedule.  It's an opportunity to dial back the sleazy gonzo, making the campaign setting of Cha'alt more accessible for the average gamer whose group conforms to mainstream tastes.

Volume one of SHADOW-CHA'ALT is called Darkest Periwinkle Shadowhack: The Cha'altening.  Instead of the desert, it begins in a typical pseudo-medieval village near a forest.  Strange dreams foretell of a looming apocalypse as young, able-bodied villagers are expelled to a cave in the middle of the night, hoping to hear reassuring news from the blind seer.

This could be a one-shot or introduction to a new campaign.  If you're interested in trying out something new but also familiar, this is the place to start.

Thanks,

Venger As'Nas Satanis

OK, so I've read through the scenario. I think this adventure is fun. There is a vision of the apocalypse and the party proceeds to look for a blind guy who is probably dead. The frivolous elves, cowardly goblins, Inter-Dimensional Spider-Hound. All of it is great. The smoothie backstory is insane but I like it!

I like the extremely open-ended story hooks that appear throughout the scenario.

Overall I think this is a fun-packed adventure and that's what I like about your products: they're fun to play and run.

If there will be more, I'll definitely buy it.

Some good art. Typical Cha'alt layout which is good and clean. Fun ideas and still a little gonzo but it's not overboard. Has nothing to do with ShadowDark despite the DTRPG description - which I would change. Usable with any OSR system, but this pushes Crimson Dragon Slayer more than in Cha'alt imo. There's one page with like 3 mentions of the system. The adventure itself could be used to give players a preview of the world of Cha'alt, and used to bring them to the world from a more standard fantasy setting. The title /naming convention is a little confusing. Shadow-Cha’alt and ShadowHack are confusing names for what I gather is just going to be a theme/setting change - I wouldn't call that a hack. I'm not sure what the intention is behind the future of this zine line, although I like seeing more favors of Cha'alt.

Thanks for the discussion, Nicholas! I intend to do a number of things, tweaking Advanced Crimson Dragon Slayer, Cha'alt, ShadowDark, and other OSRisms. If this "zine line" continues, expect to see all kinds of crazy stuff.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
