Daggerheart Core

Daggerheart is a heroic fantasy tabletop roleplaying game designed for narrative-driven play. Punctuated by fast-paced and dynamic combat, the system’s collaborative tools encourage everyone at the table to be a storyteller.

When it’s time for the game mechanics to control fate, players roll one Hope die and one Fear die (both 12-sided dice) to determine the outcome. When the Hope die is higher, you also gain Hope to power future abilities and turn the tide in your favor! If the Fear die is higher, the game master gains Fear, which they’ll use to challenge the characters and richly complicate the narrative. Every choice matters as the adventure hangs in the balance between hope and fear!

Divine Weilder

In addition to dice, Daggerheart’s card system makes it easy to get started and level up your character by bringing their capabilities to your fingertips. Ancestry and Community cards describe the way your character’s physicality and culture shape their identity. Meanwhile, subclass and Domain cards grant your character plenty of exciting abilities and spells. Craft your unique character through the cards you choose and the story you tell.

With streamlined rules, 279 beautifully illustrated cards, easy onboarding for fast pick up and play, story-first mechanics, and more, Daggerheart is calling!

Just getting prepped for running a session and wondering if there’s any option or will there be a chance to get the cards in a PDF organised by domain, rather than by level as there’s a chance my players won’t need to view every single card for every domain but their two core domains

The game is awesome but too bad we need to integrate Demiplane character sheet for online play in roll20, which doesn't have all the character options available if we don't buy the book on Demiplane.

Love the duality dice and the overall mechanics though. Best regards, Critical Role team.

I had an external link in one of my products once and got a sternly-worded letter requesting it be removed. Why is this one allowed, DTRPG (the one to an app purchase)?

Wolves of Freeport, Inc (merger between Roll20 and Drivethrurpg) owns Demiplane through Roll20, so that might be the reason it is allowed.

The Daggerheart Community License expressly forbids anyone but Demiplane/Roll20 from making Virtual Table Tops.
Roll20 does not support the system in any meaningful way to be able to run a game online.

Yea, not a fan of that part of the License. However we played Daggerheart Yesterday just fine on Roll20, however you do need Demiplane for it. It is good actually.

I think you HAVE to use Demiplane / Nexus! Shame cause I am NOT re buying pdf's I have already paid for just to be able to use their platform, And sadly I am skipping the PDF till a sale or something as 30$ for a pdf is way to high IMHO. This is GREED and I am sad to see the CR team succumb to it! With the books selling out EVERYWHERE, they could have easily made this a 20$ pdf. But I was lucky to get the Amazon standard copy (book + Cards) and am vERY happy with product.

I'm sure many people will love this game but...

I don't buy games that require more than a set of generic polyhedral dice and a character sheet to play. I don't want to buy cards or special dice for the game or have to make cards for the game. I also don't like narrative systems very much. Many of them make you buy dice to fit their system. The only narrative system I've played that I actually enjoyed were games Powered By the Apocalypse.

You can definitely like some RPGs and not like others; it's totally your choice. However, some things of note regarding Daggerheart: You don't need the cards to play; it's like feats and spells of D&D/Pathfinder. You can have the text written somewhere, like on the back of the character sheet, to compare them. At higher levels we have to do some bookkeeping, but nothing that we can't manage. Some cards need you to keep track of metacurrency, but we have done it before, like keeping track of spell charges/slots. As for narrative systems, if you don't like them, then this is probably not for you. But you mentioned PbtA, and Daggerheart is inspired by it. I am currently going through it and fascinated by how it has taken PbtA mechanics and brilliantly implemented them into a fantasy game. So, if you like PbtA, watch some sessions on CR and see if you like it. I think it is a brilliant game that I am looking forward to play.

Thank you Abhishek for your review. I will try to find some sessions online to see if actual play changes my opinion. I did not know that the system is inspired by Powered By the Apocalypse so thank you for sharing that information.

Which narrative-driven games do you need to buy special dice to run or play?

Richard,
Daggerheart requires two d12's according to the rules, but there's no reason a table couldn't agree for players with limited dice to simply roll for hope, then roll for fear on the same die. You just have to decide what's going on, then make sure the DM and other players can see each roll, to make sure each player is being fair. (I've heard stories of players who "always" roll and pick up their dice before anyone can see the result they call out. This is bad form in any system.)
As for the cards, they're included with the core book, along with all the player and GM rules, as well as abilities and monsters. That's $60 for the full core system if you buy the paper version, compared to $150 for the three core books in that system most of us grew up with.
The cards are also included digitally here, as well as being available without artwork for free, along with the downloadable Daggerheart SRD. You really don't need more than dice, a pencil, and sheets you can print yourself,...See more

For the people who are commenting about "No art in the Cards PDF", please check the Appendix section of the main Core book PDF, as it contains all of the cards with all of the beautiful art in a printable layout. The second PDF is a very welcome version of the cards without the art that are printing-friendly. So both options are there. But indeed, the image for the back sides of the cards is not included. Otherwise, this is a gorgeous product, very much worth the price!

Not gonna lie, I find reviews that come out too soon to be kinda sus. I think reviewers should take more time to read and digest the material. I mean if its a comment on bad editing or something, have at it, but most people's gripes are about nuances that I have to go and research when said person got their copy, etc...

The reviews I've seen speak less to the quality of the book, and more to the lack of quality of the review(er). These reviews come off more as paid infomercials than as genuine reviews by independent parties interested in evaluating a product. ((I have a physical copy I got for free... and I feel I was overcharged!))

Now that you mention it, I just noticed it. However, it was revealed at the Daggerheart RPG launchparty that a Daggerheart custom card creator is coming on June 6, where you will be able to customize almost everything, like the art, the text, etc which can then be saved and printed out for play. Maybe we can get the reverse side there also.

Yes, check the back of the book. Pg 385 onwards. I think you can even print them and cut them to actual card size. Darrington Press has done a great job in supplying the cards like this.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
