How well would this work for investigative, medieval and/or horror tales? E.G., say you wanted to do a medieval setting horror story more about investigation than melee?

It's a generic system, so you can do most anything with it. That said, the game itself says...
"Because it does not create the same threat [as games where PCs could die in any encounter], QuestWorlds works less well for horror, as any scares tend to be psychological, derived from the horror of the unfolding story. QuestWorlds does mystery well, and that may be a better genre than horror for stories that focus on revelations.

I have all previous editions and bought this one too (on the Chaosium website). It's an excellent game, and it's been polished for 20+ years, so it's pretty solid.

This edition is very well explained (at least the half or so I have had time to read). If you want to take a quick look at the basic mechanics, go to the SRD.

Also, thanks to the SRD, there already are day one DT supplemental material, with some more coming soon. People have been playing it for quite some time, and they were prepared for the launch.

Correct me if I'm wrong; is this a new version of the 2009 second edition or the 2019 SRD rules? Or is this a re-realease of those, due to the rebranding and sale of the HeroQuest trademark?

This is a fourth edition of the rules set. One of the major changes is how successes are calculated, which doesn't really change the play at all, but is a streamlining that gets rid of the old matrix of results and is far easier to use. There are a few other cleanups, and lots and LOTs of examples of play, and no less than three different ways to run sequences, but basically this is a much cleaner of the old HeroQuest rules.

This is the book the 2020 SRD is based on, which is an update/revision to the 2009 second edition. Quote from the book: "This makes this rule set HeroQuest 3.0e, despite the name change."

This uses the QuestWorlds SRD rules (https://www.chaosium.com/questworlds-system-reference-document/). Technically it's HeroQuest 3.0, which they mention in the book, but they changed the name for "simplicity" (read: they don't have the trademark).

I've been looking forward to this, but is there any chance of a POD option? Or maybe a physical book on the Chaosium site?

There is a POD in the works, was posted about on Bluesky, seems it may be slightly delayed.

From one of the authors:
"Due to a last-minute quality issue, it looks like a couple of weeks before we have the POD version of the book."

From the Chaosium blog: Print and POD versions will be available later this year. If you purchase the PDF from Chaosium.com, you can deduct the cost of the PDF from the price of the physical book when it is out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
