Welcome to the World of Legend

The Empire is locked in unending war. Beyond the light of civilisation, its armies clash with furious Beastmen, marauding Orc & Goblin tribes, and accursed sorcerors. Perhaps you thought yourself safe from such horrors, far from the frontlines, hidden behind tall walls and lofty promises. Such lies no longer comfort you.

You have seen the face of true evil — the corruption of Chaos, the dead returned to life, or the blind and grasping greed of the Empire’s own citizens. Worse, that evil has seen you too, and marked you as a witness to be silenced. To survive, you must find your courage, take up arms, and fight back against the ravening hordes. If fate is kind, you will rise to glory and vanquish your foe. If not, the Garden of Morr will have your corpse.

This 192 page full colour PDF contains everything players need to begin their adventures in Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game

  • Everything you need to create a character, including 6 Origins and 30 iconic Careers, from cunning Rat Catchers to tarnished Knight-Exiles.
  • An introduction to the World of Legend, the beloved setting of the Old World tabletop wargame.
  • The grim and glorious rules, a fast-paced, easy to learn, d10 dice pool system with all the lethality you’d expect of gaming in the Old World.
  • Options to customise your character, including 18 Skills to advance, dozens of Talents and Lores to learn, trappings and Assets to purchase, and Endeavours to pursue in downtime.
  • Rules for magic, both lists of spells your Wizard can memorise, and rules for casting your own improvised spells.
  • Favours, prayers, and miracles bestowed by ten of the gods.

Commenting rather than reviewing since it's only impressions so far --

1. Very interesting and simple systems.

2. Fairly clear, though of course limited, introduction to the Old World. The geography of Talagaad to the Taalbaston to Talabheim might be a bit more clear on first read, but it's not impermeable.

3. Art is professional, though not too often evocative or informative. A bit more violence and birds-eye architecture and a bit less pie-merchant and dwarf blacksmith would have worked. Nice work on clothing in a Middle Europe style, such as the flowery panache of the fighter type, but more work like the front piece of the border bridge would have been good.

3. No enemy statblocks, as others have noted, so you won't likely be playing until the GMs guide comes out.

Overall, a very appealing book and system that requires the upcoming GMs guide to play.

I hate Percentile dice systems in Warhammer products. It's what keeps me away from them. Can someone give a brief on how the dice work in this game?

You take a number of d10 that corresponds to one of your attributes (for example: Weapon Skill value 3) and then try to roll 3 d10 below or equal to your skill (for example Meele 4) value and succeed accordingly.
If you were to roll 3, 4 and 9 in this example, you would then have 2 successes.

SOME sort of quickstart adventure or rudimentary bestiary or something included in the book would have been nice. Kind of lame to have the player's guide and not be able to actually... play.

I would have been happy to see a few creature stats as well. Can't wait until the GM guide is available. I'm sure both books together will make a complete fantastic rulebook. If necessary, you can derive values from the WFRPG 4.
Hold on, a stats block (of a nag suffering from muscle weakness) is available on page 124.

I had a similar idea of converting WFRPG 4 stat blocks. I might be able to use the nag as a baseline for that, nice!

Did I miss something or does the standard horse (page 124) have the same Strength value 3 as a human or elf? I'm no animal expert, but I find this a bit unrealistic and am now worried about the balancing. In my opinion it should have at least Strength 6, Toughness too. That's ridiculous.

Hi Dirk, we take inspiration from the wargame, where the Strength of a horse is 3. We reflect the greater muscle mass of a horse by giving them special rules allowing them to act as a mount and pull carriages. One suggestion made during development was to arm-wrestle any creature that actually existed to determine their strength, but this was sensibly shot down early on. All the best, C7 team

Firstly, loving this game so far and can't wait to run this! Just a question about the Engineer Career, is it a mistake that Bretonnians can take this Career? Even the information blurb on the page seems to indicate they shouldn't.

Hi Dean, thanks for your comment. Bretonnians can become Engineers, mostly in the form of haphazardly trained individuals living in exile in the Border Princes and elsewhere. So it is rare, but not unheard of! There are likely some people also living within Bretonnia who are effectively Engineers, seeing to trebuchets, constructing castles and the like. If you would like to play as one, replace Lore (Blackpowder) with Lore (Military) and replace the option to start with a Pistol with a Crossbow instead!

The "The Empire Divided" map seems to have rather poor quality - it looks like it was downscaled from a higher-resolution image and used a bad interpolation algorithm. This is most obvious with the text of "The Empire Divided" at the lower left - if you zoom in, the letters are _heavily_ pixelated.

The other map doesn't have this problem, which makes it even more noteworthy.

Attractive looking game, some crunch but not overwhelming.

I do have one question on Fate: the Rekindle Fate endeavour requires spending a point of Fate.
Does that mean if I burn (maximum) Fate down to 0, I am stuck at 0 forever?
That seems harsh, especially for elfs.
Also, I would expect (current) Fate to matter during adventuring, not downtime.

Hey Nikolaus, thanks for your comment! This is indeed the rules working as intended - once you have Burned your last point of Fate, it is forever lost. We will aim to make this clearer in an update. Remember, Elves do already start with an additional Characteristic point over others!

NP already made a question about zones and this is a bit sore point for me too. I have seen the use of zones in various 2d20 games, Fate and Imperium Maledictum. I am sure that zones work just fine for movement but so far I have not managed to turn my brain so I could figure out how it works nicely with ranged weapons. As a fantasy RPG this is a lesser issue than in scifi games, but doesn't it decrease the actual range of a bow (for example) if I would use smaller zones? Or how would you handle this? This is an honest question as I would really like to get this to work in this one as well as Imperium Maledictum.

Hey, thanks for asking the question! Yes, technically, it does reduce ranges when you have smaller zones. Keep your zones cluttered (especially in IM), and this won't feel as weird as if you just split up an empty plain into many zones, as then it really does feel weird not to be able to shoot across the entire thing! In the Old World Roleplaying Game, you have the idea of Extreme Range, which is really any range on a typical combat encounter map, and you may shoot at that range with most ranged weapons at a penalty. So you can still shoot to a 'realistic' distance, even if you are often better off shooting at targets a zone or two over. A lot of the friction here arises from the fact that modern ranged weapons would be overpowered if modelled realistically in a roleplaying game where you want to have some melee combat too. The design team really appreciates your questions, and we're going to do a short actual play in-house to show a little of how to set up a really engaging combat using zones. I hope this helps!...See more

A tidbit that seems to be missing from the 'Contents' page (page 3) under 'Character Creation' where the 'Empire (Human)' page (page 18) seems to be missing. It simply moves from Dwarf (Page 17) to Halfling (Page 19).

Just wanted to put this on Cubicle 7's radar.

This is probably the most modern (in terms of game design) and cleanest WFRP system. I like a lot of ideas presented here, except the monetary/trading system. Characters start with interesting assets and connections, instead of being vagrants with basic equipment, which really helps when trying to run one-shots.
You kinda need a bestiary, that will be in the GM rulebook, in order to play.

Hi NB, this is a question only you can answer! If you have tried Zones and found them not to your liking, fair enough, but at least one of the developers was of the same mindset and now finds them to be really useful! Think of Zones only as a means of abstracting movement distances — they're not squares on a board game. Characters are still in a specific 'place' inside the zone, cowering behind a table, standing atop an overturned cart, and so on. Also, try using smaller zones, this can help give back some of the granularity you might be missing. We think zones are great, and you can have a great time roleplaying with them!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
