Hi, I've only played RuneQuest so far and I really love the dangerous combat system. I'm wondering if it's included here as well (i.e., hit locations and their associated effects), or if it's more like the standard BRP combat system (just hit points)?
What is magic like in general? Is it more about support spells, or are there also offensive spells and options?
Looking forward to your answer – thanks in advance!

It has a very similar combat system as RuneQuest with hit locations, but no strike ranks.

There are two magic systems. Runes, that can be used in combat for direct effects (and healing), and Seiður magic that is slower but generally more powerful, and covering curses and even earthquakes.

I really like this. The mechanics (BRP) are heavyweight, especially character creation. We have to generate the lives of our grandparents, parents and our youth, which affects some side stats. For example, if our father was in the war against the French, we get a Hate [French] Passion, but if he died during the war, we stop generating his story, but we get a Reputation for his glorious death.
There are a lot of "vibe'y" mechanics, from the skiing tests, to simulating a farm in Iceland, courting your neighbours (there's quite a list of different laws in Iceland and how the guilty are punished).... you can even do tests to find a farmer or a wife and yes, your character might not be charismatic enough to have a partner and will die alone.
The game even goes so hardcore that there are.... optional tests to see if you can deliver a baby. It's more likely that this will be removed from my campaign, but if someone likes to count dead babies (40+% chance in this game that your offspring will not...See more

How does this compare to the same author's Mythic Iceland, which is still available from Chaosium for about $10 less? Is the main difference that this version includes BRP rules so that it is a stand-alone game? Since there's no preview, it's hard to know.

According to the author, the differences are:
- While Mythic Iceland was a setting book, Age of Vikings includes all of the game system rules
- Includes passions and augment rules from RuneQuest / Pendragon
- Greatly expanded historical information
- All new art throughout the book
- Expanded bestiary
- Includes six pre-generated characters
- Lots more play examples throughout the book
- New Seiður Magic system (a form of shamanism), with a distinct flavor from Rune Magic
- New character creation mechanics to ground the hero and their family within the rich tapestry of events in the Icelandic Sagas
- New Viking raid rules
- New Devotion rules replacing old Allegiance rules from BRP / Mythic Iceland
- New rules for events taking place at the heroes' farms between adventures, including farm circumstances and family events
- New rules for ships and seafaring, including naval combat
- New gorgeous pull-out map of Iceland with place...See more

Just started reading, and I really like how this is an *actual* Viking ttrpg. No techno-death metal space vikings, but actual adventures in slightly mythic Iceland. Mythical creatures are present, but the system is pretty grounded - you own a farm, there is a chapter concerning weather/cold rules and a lot of random tables, that also explain the meaning of various words. I instantly ordered the game in print after seeing this.

This sounds exciting (especially after reading some Mythic Iceland reviews.)

My son is studying up mainly on Anglo-Saxon stories but does have to know a bit about Norse stories as well. (He is applying to ASNaC at Cambridge) So I’ve been reading a lot of those stories and source material in order to help.

I’d love to review this one but unless it goes on deep sale perhaps for Black Friday, I’ll be waiting since I don’t play BRP except the very occasional break from OSR into CoC (Pulp rules version normally) But it does look good.

I remember very much enjoying The Northlands by FGG for their S&W system. When I have time, if ramp up isn’t too involved might actually try running something using these rules because there isn’t much other than Northlands out for S&W/AD&D for this!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
