SOLO Second Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to Christmas in July! In celebration, this digital title has been marked down by 30%! For more of Santa's savings, visit our Christmas in July sale page.

SOLO is a second edition of Zozer Games' best-selling (Mithril level) roleplaying supplement, expanded with additional solo tools, two new campaigns (mercenaries and salvagers) and stats for all the ships required in the game. In full colour, with artwork by Ian Stead. Compatible with the Mongoose Traveller core Book, but as before, playable out-of-the-book with ALL EARLIER editions of that game, as well as all versions of Cepheus.

If your players are out of town, or you want to experience your own sci-fi setting ‘from the inside’, SOLO is the answer. This isn’t the usual collection of random word tables - instead it presents an array of game types and campaign styles that you can play solo, in the company of a complete adventuring party. Exploring new star systems? Chasing pirates in a naval destroyer? Touting for patrons on one frontier world after another? Salvaging a derelict ship inside an asteroid belt? Planning interstellar heists? Operating a free trader on the margins of profit – and legality?

SOLO allows you to pick up your favourite version of the game to run the kinds of sessions that are normally reserved for a traditional group of table-top players – led by a referee. You will be surprised, enthralled and captivated by the events unfolding around your player-characters. Can you shepherd them through adversity? Will their past catch up with them?

You – and YOU ALONE – will decide.

  • Six solo minigames: travellers, star traders, scouts, mercenaries, salvagers and naval officers
  • Numerous simple to use solo tools: Ask the D6, Yes/No Questions, Inspiration tables, storylines, character reactions, and qualitative task results
  • Scene resolution, for resolving complex situations involving several player characters
  • Solo combat scene resolution, speeding play, especially when running a mercenary firefight!
  • Guidelines to ease the process of character creation
  • Rules for inter-character drama
  • Solid advice on tying seemingly random events together
  • Fast play space combat rules
  • Checklists to speed play and help understanding
  • A unique space exploration sub-system
  • Star system creation rules
  • Record sheets

Note: SOLO greatly expands on the first edition (no longer available).

REVIEW OF the First Edition: What I do particularly like about this book is that there are plenty of examples; though it is based on Cepheus Engine, it supplements it by simplifying some aspects and tailors it for solo play. To demonstrate what Paul is trying to put over, he’s provided lots of examples of how these processes work. This isn’t just a short paragraph or two, he takes each section and adds to it so as you work through the book, the whole process is demonstrated in great detail / Alegis Downport

Hello, Can you please tell me if I have this right? From the preview pages it appears to be adventure outlines rather than just adventure seeds, is that correct?

No, I guess the term ‘campaign’ should really be ‘tool kit of solo mechanics for a certain type of game’.

There are no scenarios in this book, just different types of solo game you can play. Each chapter provides special solo mechanics and advice for that campaign type. So in the Explorers campaign you get a process for jumping into star systems , mapping them, then discovering interesting survey target, and then individually investigating them. In the Star Traders campaign you get encounters for Starport and worlds and spacecraft.

You can mix these tool boxes of rules up if you like, to create new campaigns: perhaps mixing the tool boxes of naval officers rules with the star traders to create your own Pirates campaign. It’s all very flexible and cusomizable.

This is an odd one. You very kindly added this 2nd edition of SOLO to my 1st edition library. Love it so much I bought a physical copy! Unfortunately because I haven't actually purchased this on Drivethru I can't leave a review. I bet there are a bunch of people in the same position as me...

I am in the same position! @Paul - thanks very much for this, v2 is a solid improvement on v1 - and that first edition was great.
I'm obviously using the book for my solo campaign but also using the random generators to add depth to the campaign that I referee for my players. I'm using Cepheus Deluxe but as a resource it will clearly work for every 2D6 sci-fi game (i.e. classic Traveller, MgT2, etc)

That's good to know! I've used it myself with Mongoose's Traveller, Classic Traveller as well as a homebrew sci-fi game. I'm really pleased you are getting some good use out of it, that's fantastic news for a game designer!

Does the Second Edition contain parts or the complete First Edition? ... or is this a totally new product?

Hi Eric,
It builds on the first edition with a number of new solo tools, as well as additional solo campaigns (salvager and mercenary). There are also stats for all the ships needed in the solo campaigns described. If you are familiar with the first edition, then this book will serve as an expanded version.

Paul,
Your first edition of SOLO brought me back to Traveller after a couple decades. Hostile got me absolutely hooked again. I ran a brief Hostile Solo campaign a few years back, and eventually got distracted by painting miniatures again.
But the second edition of Solo is making me want to go back to playing some Traveller again! Lots of nice additions to the original, this is a definite improvement. I may have to get the physical book too.
I played a Star Traders run to try out the first edition, and I realized that with "normal" Traveller characters it was almost easy mode after the first couple of trades. So this time, I think I'm going to go with one of the cargo variants of a Strela or Gagarin scout. That ought to be a real challenge!

Thanks for the kind words Shaun. I personally use Solo all the time, not just for solo campaigns that I run, but also to test out new games in development. I'm really glad you like it!

Sorry for an obvious question but this solo is it compatible with HOSTILE?

It is, but the campaigns called Naval Officers, Travellers and Star Traders don’t really work in the Hostile universe. Instead I recommend Hostile Solo, with all the same expanded solo tools along with setting specific campaigns.

Do you recommend this with Cepheus Universal? Any translational things to keep in mind or should everything be good to go out of the box?

All you will need to address are references to skill names (Astrogation rather than Navigation) for example. Simply use the skill names on your characters’ character sheet.

Will there be a SOLO Second Edition for Hostile? Probably not the place to ask, but love Hostile and wouldn't mind seeing a Second Edition. Thanks a million!

Sorry Larry, there are no plans. Obviously the Salvager and Mercenary campaigns are fully interchangeable with Hostile Solo, though.

Could I use this with other Cepheus Engine material such as Street Knight? Or is it just Traveller/space themed games?

Sorry. I had no idea what that Exclamation point icon really meant. I thought I was subscribing to the conversation because I'm interested in the same question! What rule set would be the recommendation for getting on drive-thru to play with this? Or is another core rulebook even required? Can Hostile work?

AGAIN SO SORRY FOR CLICKING THAT /!

It is Traveller compatible, but works with any similar rule set, such as Cepheus or any other sci-fi game that is generally quite realistic. You can certainly use all of the solo tools in the book to play in modern day or near future setting. Street Knight includes a mission generation table, so you are good to go! That’s all you need, although a good set of encounter tables will also help.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
