Every fantasy realm has legends of the time before, when gods were born, magic was wild, and the sentient peoples began their struggle to carve out civilizations in the chaos. This is the setting of Time of Dreams, a rules-lite fantasy world-building RPG. It is a mystical epoch where heroes known as Adepts delve into the Dream, an infinite dimension that holds every dream of every being and is the source of all things physical and metaphysical. Our heroes' exploits will become the legends recited around fires or the songs sung in taverns generations from now.

This game can be played with a GM and a group of players, and it also includes rules for a solo journaling mode of play. In fact, the GM and players are encouraged to play solo between sessions so that they can bring to the group their new legends that stem from their adventures. This game is best for players who have some experience with RPGs, and it is ideal for those who wish to improve their gaming improvisational skills. It is a complete RPG, and a group can easily build a campaign with Time of Dreams, or it can be used as a refreshing one-shot detour from a group’s usual game.

What's Inside

  • For the solo player, complete guidelines on how to play as a special Adept known as a somnambulist, an expert in surviving in the Dream and bringing back new lore to civilization.

How It's Played

  • This is a “roll under” d20 system, where all challenges are based on seven Aspects: Roots, Pulse, Mind, Heart, Voice, Sight and Spark. These are analogous to traditional fantasy RPG attributes, but are derived from the chakras of the spiritual traditions of India.
  • A major pillar of the game is the "Muse Table," a d666 table of random words that can be used to improvise magical, dreamlike, or nightmarish effects and circumstances in the game.
  • Players roll up their Aspects, roll up a brand new Kindred (race or species), and select an Adept (class), which includes the vanguard, shadow, arcanist, mystic and chronicler.
  • Players are encouraged to “bring your own dream” (BYOD) to the table, which can be utilized in the magic system of the game.
  • GMs and solo players use the helpful random idea tables to generate a new Realm and create new adventures.
  • The game has plenty of oracles, random generation tables, spells and monsters to get you or your group stared, but the true joy of the game is building your own lore through special dream-themed improvisational mechanics.
  • Solo players take the role of a reculsive Somnambulist, a powerful Adept who specializes in exploring the Dream and manifesting new legends. This is a journaling experience that builds upon the lore of the Realm as you play.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
