This handy booklet discusses square grid and hex grid coordinate systems and the math needed to calculate the distances between two squares or two hexes. Now if you spend any effort whatsoever you can easily find discussion of square grids and their math, but I have only seen one web site which discusses hex grids (google points to other pages which once you open them are referring back to the first), their coordinate systems, and associated math and it is heavily slanted towards programmers. This little booklet covers it concisely. If you can handle squaring a number and fairly basic algebra then you can handle this. Considering OSR games never seemed to fear math I'm shocked I don't recall ever seeing this covered in any of those books from the 70s and early 80s.
tl;dr: if you've ever found yourself wondering if there's a good way to find the distance between two hexes on a hex map without reaching for a ruler that hopefully has a compatible scale, then buy this.
