This game has many things to recommend it. Let's start with the visuals; the art is excellent, not just in its draw, but in how it evokes the moods and themes of the game and how it clearly shows off the idea of the setting. The quality and coordination of the art for this book is top tier and really adds to it.
Next, the setting itself. I find that it manages to feel both unique and familiar at the same time. This is a very tricky line to walk and I think the Hermitage team does a great job of it. Many ideas for the setting are something that anyone familiar with any of the suggested inspirations will easily grasp. Yet the specifics on how it combines existential dread, horror, and the comedy and drama of Upstairs/Downstairs or Downton Abbey is just brilliant. So it's very quick and easy to slip into the setting based on the familiar, while offering tons of unique story opportunities because of the broader OBR specific touches.
Next, the system is fairly easy to pick up on. It requires no special dice (I'm looking at you SW and L5R) using just d6s. I feel that an experienced gamer can easily walk a new gamer through the ideas of the system. And new gamer can grasp the basics of it in a single session easily. It also uses a mostly unique idea of combining personality traits with skill as opposed to the more common strength, dexterity, intelligence, etc. This helps the system emphasize the story and the soul of the characters. Also the ST/GM/DM/whatever-your-want-to-call-it does not roll dice, just the players. Not a completely unique idea but one that feels intended to put the emphasis on the PCs.
Finally, the community that is slowly building for this product is one of the more positive and supportive I have found. Irrelevant for those who only plan on playing with current friends, but a big plus if you find you want to play but don't have friends who are interested.
This is a quality product from a professional creative team that deserves a look from anyone interested in it's setting, themes or mood.
