Stars Without Number: Revised Edition
by Albert [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/12/2025 17:42:11

If I'm rating the system, this is a 5 star review. I love the ruleset, the settings, etc. Just a fantastic wealth of information and options.

HOWEVER. I bought the Premium POD Hardcover a few months ago and it's already falling apart. I've had to hold pages in place with tape already, really disappointed with the quality here. I don't use it roughly, I even page trained it when I got it, expecting years of use. All in all, I feel like would have been better served taking the PDF to a printer somewhere and paying more to just have a personal book printed and made than to trust DTRPG to print one on demand.

Feels really incomplete and unclear in many areas, even when reading the full edition the gm has. Some good ideas, but generally dislike most things about it.

Wolves of God: Adventures in Dark Ages England
by Michael [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/06/2025 08:30:45

A great idea executed meticulously. My only complaint would be that the style gets in the way of readability if you actually had play this. It will likely remain a curiosity on my shelf, and I'll go with Wulfwald for early middle ages OSR.

The Lexicon of the Throne
by John [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/20/2025 12:06:36

While I love the new Concept Word options for Godbound, I'm slightly disappointed with the new Words of Creation, as a bunch of them seem to be subcategories of Words that already in the base game. Like how we had the Word of Beasts before, while Lexicon gives us the Word of Insects and the Word of Birds. There's also the Words of Desire, Madness and Fear, when we already had Passion.

Though, I suppose if you need some ideas on how to create a more specialized version of a base game Word, this could serve as an example of how to do so.

Lexicon of Paradox is not a necessity for playing Godbound, but it has a bunch of new options for characters and powers that those looking to expand their concepts may enjoy.

Godbound: A Game of Divine Heroes (Deluxe Edition)
by John [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/20/2025 06:44:05

It's like Scion, without the modern day 'progressive' views and political agendas (read the section for Dahomey Amazons).

Additionally, the list of character options are potentially infinite, due to the more free form nature of how Godbound are depicted in their powers and appearances.

Want to play a dragon who burns down entire castles if they don't get their monthly tithes of treasure? How about playing a literal force of nature that has somehow managed to gain self awareness? Or maybe you'd like to play somebody who represents the pinnacle of what mortals are capable of achieving?

All these options and more are available in Godbound, and while the free version of the PDF is enough for you to enjoy the game proper, I would still recommend buying the full thing as it includes further additional options not featured in the free version. Likewise, the Lexicon of the Throne is not necessary to run the base game, but is still worth the purchase for the inclusion of yet more features.

Exactly what you need to sandbox your cyberhack. The punks are ready to slash the system. This has the npcs, the gear and the net as well as prompts for as many kinds of sprawl as you can dig up from anime, software or science fiction. The world is like ours only death is faster. Download.

Worlds Without Number
by Aaro [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/01/2025 13:38:10

(+) Beautiful illustrations, clean layout. (+) Basic mechanics appear OK if you have played SWN. I also like the Shock damage. (+) World building tables are nice, but often seem to work better as inspiration rather for rolling. (-) Lots of detail missing or difficult to find. Perhaps the rule set is complete, but it is easier to run a game when rules or suggestions how to improvise are easy to find. (-) Character creation has both quick "summary" followed by more detailed sections for Attributes, Skills, etc, confusingly structured. Summary is quite lengthy to be a summary, it repeats a lot of text from later "main" sections, but not all. Perhaps it could be better organized? (-) Practical example of missing stuff: there is a focus for mounted combatant ("Rider") and list of costs of mule/draft horse/riding horse/war horse, but no stats and no guidance how to run mounted combat. (Presumably it is intended to use same generic beast stats for both of your 30sp mule and 2,000 sp war horse ... remind me why you are buying the war horse again? PC with "Rider" has a bonus to steed's Morale , but how often there are Morale checks for horse mounts in combat? Perhaps it is different to bring a trained vs untrained horse to combat?) Sure, GM can always houserule, but it is difficult to come up with a good rule/ruling/whatever -- that why it is much nicer when you have a good rulebook.

I've been gaming ... a long time. I've explored lots of games, and I think WWN is one of the best games that balance simplicity with player options, tactics with theater of mind, immersion with gameplay. It is just a solid system that supports roleplaying without dictating it. It is evocative without intrusion. In short, it is one of the favorite games I've encountered in the past (gulp) 40 years of RPGs.

And that's before we get to the magnificent GM tools. The brilliant random tables and tools that helps GMs come up with a scaffold of ideas at a detail level desired by the GM. Plus it all ties into multiple genres and other tools from Cities and Stars without Number.

Kevin is indeed a great author and I'm glad to know he is a fellow Michigander!

Buy this game!

Godbound: A Game of Divine Heroes (Free Edition)
by Isla [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/13/2024 06:29:01

I enjoyed the premise and default setting. There is a lot to help you, both as a player and GM. My experience has been as a solo campaign. Because of that I wound up making some tweaks. For example foes with multiple attacks/actions or auto hits I made them spend Effort to do those things. Fights felt very offensively focused. Outside of combat was much more diverse, and getting to play a demigod on their way to godhood is really awesome. The game empowers your character to have a big, meaningful, impact on the world. Which is not something you normally get to experience in a game.
