A streamlined and updated version of the classic Demon Lord ruleset. While I'm looking forward to all the new settings, I'll certainly be using this compendium in all my future Shadow of the Demon Lord games.

A fun 30 pages of stuff to bring to your table!

The book has a quick bit on dwarven culture in the Weird Wizard universe, about 5 pages. Then goes on to give us some fun stuff to use at character generation – 20 professions, equipment, names, and a new novice path, the Spiritsworn. This is all great for people thinking about playing dwarves, but what about people with existing non-dwarf character you ask? Well let’s address that…

For ALL players we get: 5 new fighting styles for fighters like smasher and tunnel warrior; 3 new rogue abilities like breaker and stone blessed. Chapter 3 gives us new exciting materials used to forge items, new armor types like spiked and ablative (that blows up, wounding your attackers!), new shields like the bladed shield. New weapons with a variety of gadgets and ammo, magical gear and trinkets, like stonemelt and trollblight elixirs, a few animal stats like the stalwart battle ram.

Spells? What about spells? We get the new Ancestor tradition with 14 spells as well as 14 new spells expanding existing traditions, 6 new magical rites as well as rites rules, also covered in Glory of the High One. We also get 5 new exciting items of power.

Well worth $8 and not just for value-conscious and gold-greedy dwarves – a lot of this material can be used for other characters.

Great starter adventure for Shadow of the Weird Wizard. Recommended.

Excellent addition to the Shadow of the Weird Wizard line, packed full of extra detail on the religion of the High One - new player options, as well as plenty of GM inspiration, and enough vaguaries that you're still not entirely sure if they're over-zealous but genuine goodies, or in fact misled by a faith that just wants dominion.

A really solid supplement! A lot of good stuff in here, that's very useful to players. My only complaint is that it's not clear when one buys the core book (Shadow of the Weird Wizard) that this supplement is necessary for more ancestry options. I bought the companion book, Secrets of the Weird Wizard, expecting the ancestries to be in there, and they weren't! It took a third purchase for me to get what I was looking for.

Fun and flavorful. This book provides an alternate way to calculate power, and also, talents for ALL the traditions! It may not be for everyone, as it can amp up the power level of the PCs. At the very least these talents would look really cool slapped onto an Enchanted Object or 2! Highly recommended, at the very least for the flavor and inspiration provided within these pages.

I love insectoids, almost as much as I love goblins! So when I saw the Yerath were getting a "Victims" book, best believe I marked my calendar. And I'm not disappointed.

First, the new art is great. The cover with 3 styles of Yerath and the bright orange backdrop is quite evocative. Then we get into some history and lore. It's a fun read to learn more about the history and culture. Of course we get plenty of random tables to help create our Yerath, or to inspire the imagination. At the end are flavorful new replacement talents for Yerath on their Novice Paths.

If you like bug people, this is a great supplement. If you don't like insectoids, then you can like, buzz off dude. Seriously though, great book. For Queen & Hive!

This is my favorite fantasy system. I came from loving the Demon Lord system, and this builds off of the great ideas from there. The Forbidden Tradition has been scrubbed off, now it's fun for the whole family!...while still injected with enough of that classic Schwalb to satisfy my dark side. So, I'm no wordsmith or reviewer. I just love the system and want to show my support. Instead of comparisons to any other system, I can just tell you what I like!

Paths and progression - love the options for expanding your character. The paths are fun, flavorful, and inspire the imagination

Magic and traditions - love all the traditions and the way you gain talents and spells. They are all so flavorful and inspiring. Dude, those War spells, like anime protagonist stuff!

Initiative system - I'm a fan, as a DM I love the ease of -I go first- unless anyone wants to use their reaction to go before me. And the players decide their order so the buffers can go first for example. Which leads me to

Reactions matter - There are cool reaction options for all characters, and also spells and talents that use them. And you can use it to go before the baddies.

That's the core of my likes. Now, I could be harsh, and it's worth dropping the rating by 3 stars, but dare I say...no goblins!!! If it wasn't for the Weird Ancestries supplement this game would be completely unplayable! (I joke!)

Seriously though, I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed (lol) that humans are the only ancestry. BUT, I do understand why. I'm a big fan of the Weird Ancestries book and how all 30 playable ancestries were able to be expanded on. So that's probably a strike, needing the extra book, plus the Secrets book if you're a DM. Demon Lord had everything you needed in one book, so I've been spoiled. It's not enough to knock a star down for me, I love the whole package.

I recommend Shadow of the Weird Wizard. I love flavor and this system is dripping with it. If you need a new fantasy fix, with just the right amount of crunch (in my old age opinion) then I highly suggest you check this game out!
