The Towers of the Weretoads

I think this mini-module has some very good concepts and disgusting imagery. The weretoads and their young are gross and cool. The towers with Ewok Village style bridges between are cool. The traps are cool and make sense.

I just feel there's not much "meat"... no interesting magic loot, none of any kind in fact beyond a couple low chances of rooms containing a magic item the DM is on the hook to roll up. No "puzzles" beyond "how do we navigate a totally flooded area." No weretoad leader or gnarly giant toad boss or anything. Just d6, d10, d20 mooks at a time and gross objects to sell for gold. The map is pretty rough and has some awkward room shapes. My impression is running it as-written would be highly reminiscent of low level Gold Box/Pool of Radiance type hack and slash.

It's okay! Some great ideas and imagery to steal.

Barrowmaze Complete 10th Anniversary (Monochrome Cover)

Speaking as a DM this has been the core "thing" of the longest-running and most successful tabletop campaign I've been involved with. The book excels in clean/easy presentation for both the main town of Helix and the dungeon itself--those elements have been astonishingly easy to run. The dungeon is surprisingly varied for as uniform as it appears on the surface. Great art throughout.

I find the "story" of the module very thin and the pantheon details are quite weak, but it's malleable and easy enough for a DM to flesh out. Small random encounter tables, particularly on the barrow moor, are a bigger issue to me. I find the complete lack of detail given to the nearby "big city" Ironguard Motte pretty nonsensical. As a physical product, especially an "anniversary special edition," I think a fold-out poster map of the Barrowmaze would have made a lot of sense.

One Page Dungeon Compendium: 2023 Edition

The One Page Dungeon thing is certainly a noble effort. That being said out of 100+ entries, as a DM who prefers kind of low-fantasy minimally-gonzo stuff I could count on one hand the dungeons that I might ever actually use. "And Still They Rise" means anyone adhering to the theme is doing undead, baking, or both. Lots of (in my opinion) overly precious baking-zombie-themed pages in here. Some rarer stuff playing with "elevation" that might be kind of fun.

Lair of the Lamentable Leech Lord (the very first entry) slotted PERFECTLY into my campaign and we had a great time with it.
